Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, no planning permission is needed. Since 2008, outbuildings in England have been covered by ‘permitted development’ rights - meaning you can install one without applying, as long as a few basic conditions are met.
You may need planning permission if you live in a designated area (such as an AONB, National Park, conservation area or World Heritage Site) or if your property is listed.
If not, you're generally fine provided:
- The sauna is not within 2m of a boundary (e.g. a garden fence)
- It doesn’t take up more than 50% of your garden space
- It’s not placed in front of the main elevation of your house
Check with your local planning authority for total peace of mind.
Can I place my sauna on grass?
A flat, firm surface is required for your barrel sauna. While a concrete base is ideal, level paving, decking, gravel or hardstanding are all suitable options.
Avoid placing your sauna directly on grass, as it won’t offer the stability or drainage required for long-term use.
What maintenance does my sauna require?
Your barrel sauna is designed to be low-maintenance and long-lasting.
Inside, the sauna requires only basic cleaning and good housekeeping. If you’ve chosen an electric heater, we recommend a safety check by a qualified electrician every 2–3 years to keep everything running smoothly.
